Wow, what a P.H.A.T chune! The new album of THE GATES OF SLUMBER is a monument which grows from one listening experience to the other. During my first listening experience I was shocked like a baby having its candy taken away. I expected an exact copy of their dateless masterpiece "Conqueror". Probably my expectations were too high. The songs appealed a little bit premature. The arrangements seemed to be not very sophisticated and the melodies not very concise. But what a misapprehension! You need a few runs until the tracks will indelibly sear into your memory and you will recognise that this album is a monolith carved in stone - hard, heavy, unfussy and solid. It would be clear that the new album wouldn't top the predecessor "Conqueror". Nevertheless the new album "Hymns of Blood & Thunder" will top many best-of lists of 2009.
