Miss Lava - Blues for the Dangerous Miles [2009]

The volcano has erupted. No, not Iceland’s most famous volcano Eyjafjallajökull, we’re talking about the Lisbon’s heavy stoner rock band Miss Lava – chic name without a doubt. Miss Lava debuts its first recording and they think big. As per the PR wire:
The result is a powerful output, a flaming bitch that is burning with the desire to unleash its lava rock 'n roll disaster onto the world. Miss Lava is ready to burn baby.

Miss Lava is hotter than the asphalt of Georgia. Usually, this kind of rock bands has their origin in the United States. It is more surprising that Portugal is the native country of Miss Lava. From time to time these guys remind me of the band StoneRider. Miss Lava has the same Sleaze Rock attitude in their music but this album is much more mightier. The modern and huge production, mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, InMe, among others), let the bass lines and psychedelic sounds bang out of the speaker boxes. Of course the sound is stoner like, but not very distorted and fuzzy. This could be criticized by some, which may find the sound too smooth and polished. If you are tired of being bored by ultra slow, dark and grim Funeral Doom and you’re up for kick-ass, high-pressure energy rock, fueled and ignited, you’re at the right place. This album goes down well and charges you up. The adrenalized Portuguese floor the accelerator.

From the free wheelin' demon speedin' of the opener "Don't Tell a Soul" to the psychadelic landscapes of "Scorpio", "Blues For The Dangerous Miles" is a rich sonic journey. There's the inevitable stoner anthem "Ain't Got Time”, the sky filling chorus of the single "Black Rainbow", the rebellious heaviness of "Revolt", the heavy march of "Blind Dog", the sexy shakin' of "Birth, Copulation and Death", the dramatic "The Wait", the self brightness of "Shine On", the groovy twist of "Second Chance" and the epic escape of the title song.

So let it burn, baby, burn.
