StonerRock.com is Down Forever!

Posted by Captain Beyond Zen on Friday, December 3, 2010

Dan and Melanie posted the following statement today:

StonerRock.com R.I.P.

December 15, 1999 - November 29, 2010
On November 29th, 2010 the StonerRock.com website was suddenly sucked into the void. We did everything we could do, but it was not possible to save it.

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the community supporters, forums administrators and content contributors. You can give yourselves a high five for keeping StonerRock.com online for an extra year. Thank you!

We are not revealing any details about what happened because we don't want to give the perpetrators any satisfaction or notoriety.

From now on we will be 100% devoted to our other websites, All That is Heavy and MeteorCity. We hope that you will continue to support us in our continued efforts to bring the rock to the people.

This is our final statement with regards to StonerRock.com and this very difficult situation. Our heads are spinning. We are devastated.

Sincerely and regretfully,
Dan & Melanie

What a sad day for the stoner/doom community! StonerRock.com is down forever! I just can't believe it! I'm devastated. How could that happen? The centre of the stoner/doom/sludge universe for 11 years dissolved into nothing! What a pity! I'm sad to see StonerRock.com in ashes, but proud to be part of the site as a contributor for the last nine months. Many thanks to Dan and Melanie for this opportunity. The time we shared together was too short but for all that I enjoyed it.  Now the crestfallen community shouldn't fall apart! This is a big challenge for remaining sites such as The Obelisk, Heavy Planet, The Ripple Effect, The Soda Shop, Doommantia and Captain Beyond Zen among many others to keep waving the flag for stoner/doom/sludge/drone/psych music.

Peace☮, love♥ and fuzz

EYEHATEGOD w/ KYLESA Live in Karlsruhe

Posted by Captain Beyond Zen on Sunday, April 25, 2010

It was one of my biggest disappointments this year to miss YOB at Substage in Karlsruhe on 21st April. Due to a traffic jam I missed Totimoshi, Dark Castle and which was far worse, YOB.

As if it was not enough, the YOB T-Shirts with the awesome black motif were sold out. But however first things first. The line-up for the concert on 21st April at the Substage in Karlsruhe, including EyeHateGod, Shrinebuilder, Kylesa, Sourvein and Dark Castle, was unbelievable and promised the hightlight of the year, but it came differently. Unfortunately the volcano eruption of Eyjafjallajökull cropped up. Shrinebuilder had already cancelled their gig at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, because of that and so it was certain that they are not going to perform in Karlsruhe. Dito for Sourvein, which also had to cancel.

Thus I kept track of news reports of who was going to replace them. My disappointment about Shrinebuilder's cancellation could have been soothed by the fact that YOB was going to perform instead, which released an awesome album with 'The Great Cessation' in 2009, of which live performance I was excited about. I had to work on that day and when I finally left work to go to the concert I ended up in very pesky traffic jam. I saw the time slipping away minute by minute and all hope that I would be able to see YOB live. My worst fear became reality when I finally arrived at the venue and just heared the last riff being played by YOB. What a bummer! Such bad luck!

Well then, left were Kylesa, which reached rank 4 with their last album 'Static Tensions' at Stonerrock.com's Top 29 albums of 2009. And left over was the Sludge legend EyeHatGod. After a short break, Kylesa entered the stage. A furious thunder of noise evolved. My bad mood just seem to become better and I made my way to the stage, where the moshpit was raving and stagediving.

What a great vibe and I wanted to make a few pics and stepped into the area reserved for the press. But suddenly a security guard told me to make like a tree and leave. Ok, I toddled off. I tried anyway to make the best out of the crappy pics I made.

After this bummer I split and went to the last row and recorded a couple of video clips, which you could admire here. All in all I only really got to experience the Kylesa concert. They at least helped to soothe my big disappointment.

Finally the Sludge pioneers EyeHateGod from New Orleans entered the stage. The legend lives! An obviously high spirited Mike Williams snotted around like Johnny Rotten in his best days. "Karlsruhe, meine Freunde" he greeted the audience. In order to warm himself up he banged the microphone against his head repeatedly, which seemed quite funny. Jimmy Bower interluded 'Sweet home Alabama' and a few Country tunes. Often the old chaps had to take a break in between to recover as they were not in the best physical condition. Nevertheless it was still a special experience to see the living Sludge Metal legend live on stage!

ANCESTORS w/ NIGHT HORSE Live in Munich

Posted by Captain Beyond Zen on Monday, April 19, 2010

The FEIERWERK Sunny Red venue in Munich is one of these small fucked up dumps where the total underground rules - a paradise for students and intellectuals to meet like-minded people in an elitist circle, in other words a place where you can feel safe from and superior towards the ignorant species. That was exactly my experience.

My wife and I were very German-like punctual and already arrived at 8 o'clock. Only four visitors there - including ourselves. The concert was supposed to start at 8:30 PM and we made ourselves comfy on one of those many still empty worn out benches in the backrow, which means five steps away from the stage. I was able to test my camera with difficult lighting conditions already, as the room was lit very sparsely.

Unfortunately the lighting did not get any better during the concert - but it's not like we are not familiar with this particular characteristic of such venues. Slowly but surely more spectators came in in drips and drabs in order to shoot that few piccies for the memorabilia box (Facebook?). The first moment of excitement arose when Justin Maranga suddenly appeared around the corner out of the dark.

The musicians Sam James Velde (vocals), Justin Maranga (guitar), Greg Buensuceso (guitar), Nonstop Nick D'Itri (bass) and Jamie Miller (drums) filled up the stage little by little. After a brisk soundcheck, NIGHT HORSE jammed away like a house on fire and rocked the house. Only barely after a few split seconds the long hair strands was energetically thrown around the room and the crowd turned into a headbanging orgy.

NIGHT HORSE's music has its origin deep in the '70s heavy rock. They "come across as the bastard nephew of Black Sabbath and Mountain on a drinkin' binge with their evil stepchild Kyuss" (Allan Grusie).

Sam James Velde, a former Bluebird member, is a a true rock front man through and through with all the gestures and poses. With twin guitars NIGTH HORSE is an ass-kicking riff machine with a great southern hard rockin' blues component. One of the many hightlights was the song 'Shine On Me'. This is a song you can have a look at below. Great concert, great band!

During the break I paid the merchandizing table a short visit and returned with an ANCESTORS T-shirt. Finally, the members of ANCESTORS, Justin Maranga (guitar, vocals), Nick Long (bass guitar, vocals), Brandon Pierce (drums, gong), Chico Foley (electronics, keys, vocals) and Jason Watkins (organ, piano, vocals) entered the stage without any great introductions and played away.

They hit of with the tunes of the song 'The Trial'. Seventeen minutes of cosmic beauty and dissociation. The next song was not less magical then 'The Ambrose law'. The musicians created a lot of excitement and took the watching crowd into another time and space.

Another hightlight was the song 'Bounty of Age' and need I say more? This band's music speaks for itself. Check out the videos here. Awesome concert. Grab the opportunity to see ANCESTORS live whenever and wherever you can. In missing it, you would be sorry.

Editorial Announcement

Tomorrow I will be in Munich to visit the South African Embassy. It is a two and a half hour car drive and therefore I will grab the opportunity to go to a concert. ANCESTORS (w/ NIGHT HORSE) are on their first European tour and they'll make a stop at FEIERWERK in Munich. Why not take the chance to see the creators of my no. 1 album of 2009? No question - I'll be there. I will shoot some pics and video clips. You can expect some cool stuff here.

Beyond that I'm thinking about whether I should do some changes on my blog. In details I want to change the template, possibly darker, in the colors black, green and dark grey. I'm even thinking to change the blog title to a more 'individual' name but a definite decision hasn't been made. Maybe everything remains or much has to change for everything to stay the same.
What do you think?

So please stay tuned!

DOMES OF SILENCE: New Single 'Temple Of The Wasp'

Posted by Captain Beyond Zen on Friday, November 27, 2009

Domes of Silence from Oxford have survived and they are back with the fantastic new single 'Temple of the Wasp' which will be released on iTunes on 3rd December. The sound is very stoner-like with fuzzy guitars and downtuned bass but Domes of Silence put a barrel of raw garage rock and a Stooges- reminiscence into their music. The title track is a catchy tune and you will be infected after the second listening experience. Then you'll sing along: "I get down on my knees, get down on the floor, everybody is screaming the same as before". They get down to the nitty-gritty. The second song 'Bad Wisdom' kicks ass and comes up with an incredible 70’s guitar sound and "uh"-screams in true Iggy Pop-style. Domes of Silence are pushed by passion and grief. Full marks for this. Good on ya!
